Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning "circle". In many cultures and religious traditions the mandala is a symbol for wholeness and unity. Viewing and making mandalas can create an inner sense of peace, order and groundedness. Circular forms are found in nature, and in religious architecture, art and rituals.
I offer two kinds of mandala workshops. In the simple version, we draw free-hand mandalas and color with color pencils. This is great for younger children and junior youth. Adults also love it as a silent "Mindful Mandalas" meditative experience.
In the complex version, we use traditional tools such as a compass, protractor and straight-edge. We will first construct a geometric grid in pencil, adding and subtracting lines until the design is complete. Then we will add color with watercolor paints. Fun, creative and meditative, this project is great for teens and adults. The finished mandala is about 10" in diameter. Text can be added if desired.
The following photos are from recent youth and adult workshops. Most participants had very little artistic experience.
