Picture Book Residency
Picture Book Residency
Hilltown Cooperative Charter School, Haydenville MA
In this residency project, Jeannie worked with a mixed second/third grade class to turn their stories into illustrated picture books. Children learned the vocabulary of picture book art, and how to sew their own books. They discussed page design and did exercises to develop illustration skills. They were then led step-by-step through the planning process used by professional illustrators.
Planning Process
- Divide up the text.
- Circle words that will inspire illustrations.
- Make thumbnail drawings on a storyboard to plan pages.
- Make a book dummy with larger sketches.
- Think about page layout (borders, bleeds, fonts, location of text)
- Create final artwork with Prismacolor pencils.
